 Describe a typical day at work...

There is no “typical” day at work; this is definitely not a desk job!
In any given week, a few days are spent attending various client meetings.
Going to a dress fitting, meeting with stationary experts to design invitations, or tasting menu options with the caterer can all be in a day's work.
Days and nights are filled with excel spreadsheets, and keeping budgets and time lines on track. Guest lists are formatted with proper etiquette and invitations are stuffed, sealed, stamped and hand delivered (I have my favorite post offices throughout the DC area that will let me camp out and stamp away!).

 What should brides do before they meet with you?

Gather a few ideas on the style and feel you want your wedding to convey.
This will help us gain a little insight into your wedding and help steer you in the right direction of venues and vendors.
Do not worry that you have to find the perfect images, this is just a starting point to begin the creation of your wedding look.
It is also very helpful to have an idea of the size of the guest list.
You do not want to run into problems down the road by looking at venues that are too small or even too large for your guest list.

What are common mistakes people make when planning their wedding?

Not talking to all the "powers that be" in regards to the budget.
It is a topic that no one really wants to tackle, but it is important to face this head on.
Having the budget discussion early ensures that we can make the right decisions and avoid trouble down the road.

What is your favorite part of a wedding? 

The last minute before the bride walks down the aisle.
It is such a special and intimate moment before her grand entrance.
It is usually myself, the bride and her father.
It is such an honor to be the last person with the bride, primping her dress, adjusting her veil and doing a lipstick check.
I love how the dads always ask if they are holding their daughter’s arm correctly, how fast to walk as well as a last minute refresher on how to lift the veil.
I have seen the most touching and often funny moments between a father and daughter, and it is amazing to be the one to share these special moments filled with excitement.
As I cue my bride to go, I always hug her and say,
“Go get married!!”

How early in advance should brides contact you before their wedding? 

To take full advantage of our services, it is best to hire your wedding planner in the beginning. Let us help and guide you from the first steps, so that the overwhelming feelings of panic and stress do not set in. But when those feelings do undoubtedly arise, call us, we will be ready to go!

What are some of your favorite weddings you have worked on?

My favorite thing about working on weddings is that each one is so different.
Yes, the framework is often the same, but each couple, family and details set their day apart. One of my favorites was a wedding that was originally meant to be for almost 300 guests.
As the couple worked on the guests list, we changed course.
What resulted was an intimate New York City trip of a lifetime for 60 of the bride and groom’s closest family and friends.
We decided to treat these guests to a weekend they would never forget.
The couple graciously took care of every detail from travel, hotels, a Broadway show; even an evening horse and carriage ride through Central Park.
It was nice to be able to spoil the guests to such an extreme.

Ultimately, my favorite weddings are those where the couple and I concentrate on the details to truly make the wedding unique and special.
No matter how big or small, when we pay attention to the details, guests feel special and enjoy the entire evening to the fullest.

What trends are you seeing in the bridal industry?

Since the Royal wedding everyone has seen that we are going back to classic and elegant.
Rustic and vintage are still big, but people are making room for glam and luxury in a big way. Nudes, blushes and sparkle are all over the red carpet this season, and I cannot wait to translate that into tablescapes and décor.

I also foresee flower girls making a big comeback en masse.
There is nothing like a mini
entourage dressed in lace and bows. Need inspiration, just channel Kate Moss’ recent
wedding photos.

We interviewed her for our blog so our brides could get to know her better.

1) How long have you been in business?

I have been designing wedding flowers for 19 years. I started a home based business so that I could be home with my small children. We have 7 kids and we still have little ones in the house all these years later.

2) What inspired you to become a florist?

My family was most certainly the inspiration behind me becoming a floral designer.
My grandmother was an avid gardener and my parents ran a garden center all of my life. Flowers and foliage have been my calling since I was a young girl.
The miracle of a flower and the art it becomes when designed properly completely enthralls me.

3) What is your favorite flower?

I have many favorites: Lilacs, Peonies, Cabbage Roses and Clematis Vine were the original blooms that I was introduced to.

4) What advice would you give brides about picking out their flower arrangements for their wedding?

Choose flowers that speak to you, almost everyone can remember a certain flower from their youth. Choose timeless classic designs that will always be in style.

5) What is the best floral arrangement for winter months and what flowers are in season?

I love creating evergreen designs in the winter. I also enjoy adding Tulips, Daffodils or flowering branches to winter designs, this gives me hope that spring is on the way!!!

6) What trends do you you see in floral design?

After several years of very rustic and vintage inspired designs, I see many of my brides moving towards vintage romantic designs or vintage glamour.
We are simply not done with vintage yet.
The designs are becoming for formal though and less organized.
Soft romantic colors and accents are requested here frequently.

7) How early should brides contact you before their wedding?

Brides should book their favorite vendors as soon as they are engaged.
The best vendors book you quickly.
Thankfully our studio has been published in the last few years, so demand for our services has gone up as well.
We currently have several brides on the books for 2013, but we do still have dates available for 2012.
Each weekend is unique and our availability fluctuates based on the size of the events we are working on.
2011 was, oddly enough, the year of the last minute bride.
We were surprised to see how many people booked us with under 5 weeks to plan their wedding.
Thankfully, our studio was large enough to be able to accommodate their last minute requests.

8) Do you have any additional advice for couples planning their wedding?

I love when brides use Pinterest boards.
These boards give me an immediate sense of the brides style.
I also suggest that brides lay in bed at night when everything is quiet and still and imagine the way you want everything to look.
Close your eyes and visualize your wedding party all standing together in their beautiful attire from Carine's and pretty flowers from Holly Heider Chapple Flowers.
I would also encourage a bride to never skimp on her gown or her photographer.

Hope everyone is having a great 2012 and is following through on their new year's resolution...
I had a great holiday filled with sunshine, snow and a wedding...
This holiday season was spent with my in-laws. My husband and I decided when we had gotten married that we would split the holidays every year. So this year was Thanksgiving with my family and the Holidays with his.

So off to Boca Raton, Florida we went.

We started our Christmas morning with Bloody Marys....

Took our family picture in front of our Charlie Brown Christmas tree...But I have to say that it was grown by my in-laws all year...
Let me introduce you: from clockwise: my father in-law Bob (best chef), my mother in-law Bonnie (sweetest lady you can come across), Me & my husband, RJ (aka Fuzz).

The day after Christmas we headed to Steamboat, Colorado to celebrate the wedding.
We were lucky enough to stay at my husbands aunt & uncle's house.
Love the name Lucky 2 Ranch...

The ranch was great...even came with our own pack of alpacas...

We visited a Hot Springs...This picture was taken after our cold dance of trying to put our clothes back on as fast as possible...

Congratulations Jenny and Konstantin!

Congratulations to one of my dearest friends Jenny who just got engaged this past weekend.

We met in college and have shared too many good times to recount!

I was so excited when Konstantin called me in September

asking to help design Jenny's ring.

Four months, a proposal and a happy friend later...

Well I think it's best if I let Jenny tell the rest...

How did you meet Konstantin?

Konstantin and I met at a work happy hour-- he was sitting quietly at the end of the table with those big green eyes of his. I had to beat the other women off with a stick, it was like clubbing baby seals.

How long have you been dating?

About 3 years. He surprised me on our 3 year anniversary with white lilies and some homemade Bulgarian soup.

Where did you go on your 1st date?

We actually didn’t really have an official “first date”, we hung out as friends first. I’m kind of like a dude, so we cracked open some beers for an impromptu gathering at his house with friends. Our typical “date nights” can be anywhere from a nice dinner & movie, to the shooting range.

Tell us your engagement story. How did he propose?

Upside down in a flight simulator at the Air & Space Museum with a $5 Target ring. He made sure to get me good and nauseated first before he took out the real ring he had been working on for months. Just for the record, I said “yes” to both rings!

Do you have any recommendations for how recently engaged couples should tell their family and friends about their engagement? How did you spread the news?

Hide everything on Facebook because news gets around so fast! We called my parents and skyped his family in Bulgaria, Germany and Budapest. Then we skyped our families so they could cheers one another.

We know it is early, but have you set a date or picked a wedding location?

Not yet, we’re going to enjoy the moment for now, but the date will likely be in about a year or so.

Have you purchased any wedding magazines or visited any wedding websites?

Nope, I’m relying on Carine and her staff. I wouldn’t even know where to get a bridal magazine—those exist?!

If so, what wedding trends are influencing you?

Simple and ethereal, with nicely architected tailored details. I’m partial to roman or greek-inspired designs that flow easily and fit closely to the body. I don’t like too much fluff, so I’m really leaning towards very organic and outdoor accents and colors.

I know you must have a whirlwind of questions coming from your friends and family.

So, the fun story about the ring- I got the call from Konstantin and after hanging up I had to figure out what Jenny really liked.

I set up a fun ring shopping day in October, for the "just-in-case" phone call if it were to come my way.

Once I got her style I knew the best place and person to visit for the diamond was Blauweiss Berkowitz in New York, and Jessica was an amazing assistant.

The diamond was bought amongst the frenzy of bridal market, shipped to DC, and then Boone and Sons helped complete the vision.

Jenny had liked two rings from our shopping excursion, so Konstantin and I married the two designs to create the perfect ring for Jenny.

After all of the hard work, here is the final product...

My favorite wedding...

I will never forget the moment I saw Melissa Rivers' wedding in magazines when I was a little girl.

I still remember pouring over articles about how Joan Rivers and Melissa Rivers worked with Preston Bailey to recreate Russia inside a ballroom.

The beautiful blue background and branches transformed the ballroom into a magical winter forest.

EXCEPT IT WASN'T CHEESY!

It was perfect. Her wedding was dreamy. I loved everything about it.

She even had desserts shaped like bees because the name Melissa derives from the Greek version of bee.

Here are some of the CBA Girls favorite weddings...

Carine loves Kennedy weddings.

One of her all time favorites is John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's wedding

in Cumberland Island because it was clean and sophisticated.

It wasn't overdone and it embodied their style.

Above all this wedding was creative.

Look at the candlelight peeking through illuminating the bride and groom.

Fun facts about the Kennedys

*Carine got married on JFK and Jackie Kennedy's wedding date, September 12th :)

*According to Gemgossip.com, Jackie Kennedy's Van Cleef and Arpels engagement ring was a 2.84 carat emerald with 2.88 diamond carat accents.

WOW!

She later redesigned the ring and added marquise stones around .

However, this is an example of how dream weddings have unique elements with a twist!

People always say Jackie was traditional.

She wasn't so traditional was she if she had an emerald ring....huh????

I strongly speculate Jackie and JFK created this ring together because this ring is so unusual.

*Designer Gogo Ferguson designed JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's wedding rings based on the mold of a ribcage of a snake.

This might sound strange but the door knockers in the US capital were also designed using the molds of deceased snakes, twigs, and even bird nests.

*Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's Narcisco Rodriguez wedding dress reportedly cost $40,o00 (celebritybrideguide.com).

This dress revolutionized the industry---creating a trend where women began wearing curve hugging sheath style gowns.

Gabriella's favorite is Audrey Hepburn's wedding in Funny Face.

She is a HUGE Audrey fan.

The short Givenchy dress paved the way for fun, flirty short wedding styles that characterized the 1950's.

Hannah loved the traditional elements and grandeur of Kate Middleton and Prince William's wedding.

Clearly, Middleton was influenced by Grace Kelly's wedding.

Jess loves Maggie's wedding in the movie In Her Shoes.

What Jess likes about this wedding is how the couple incorporated their personality into their wedding by hosting their event at their favorite restaurant.

The steel drums and laid back tone created a warm and inviting feeling.

The holidays are a special time of year because families have the opportunity to see one another. The ability to travel and have your loved ones in one location makes the holiday season a great time to host a wedding. Many brides are also opting to do destination weddings over the holidays. As a bridal consultant I'm obsessed with them and always learn so much.
One of my favorite bridal magazines is Southern Weddings.

Lara Casey, the editor, always brings to light old and new wedding customs.
Recently, the magazine featured a page of southern traditions such as the grooms cake...

Carrying a handkerchief...

Finally, the tradition of brides carrying a bouquet with a Bible attached...

For instance, the significance of carrying a nosegay with a Bible derives from Northern Ireland. This tradition brings to mind Grace Kelly--who also carried a Bible with her lily of the valley bouquet.

You should check out Southern Weddings and think about what types of traditions you want to incorporate in your wedding!

Although we may not be lining up for the midnight premiere of

"The Twilight Saga's Breaking Dawn Part 1",

we here at Carine's Bridal are just as excited as any Twi-hard fan to see the new movie.

Here are our top reasons why we just can't wait...

1- We are DYING to see what Bella's wedding dress looks like.

We know the dress is a combination of lace, satin, buttons down the back and long sleeves.

According to the book it's going to be a bit more Jane Austen than Kate Middleton

(how could you go wrong either way?!).

DYI Fridays: Wedding Thank You Cards

If any of you are like me,

you're obsessed with DIY projects.
I just can't get enough of them!
And to add to the re-vamping of our blog,
we've decided to have DIY Friday's.
No weekend plans? You have some now!
Forecast says it's supposed to be cold this weekend ...
so grab that cup of hot cocoa and write those
Wedding Thank You Cards
you've been putting off!
These adorable thank you cards came from My DIY Wedding Day

These thank you packets include an embossed card and favorite photos
from the wedding all neatly wrapped in a ribbon and tag.

As I was looking through various DIY projects,
what caught my eye for this one was the luggage tags.
I am a HUGE fan of luggage tags, they give
a vintage yet playful touch to everything.
I'm a hair stylist who was in desperate need for business cards,
and hated everything that I saw.
I've even used luggage tabs to make my own business cards ...

so as soon as I saw the little Thank You tabs,
I had to share.

Supplies Needed to make Thank You Cards:

watermark ink or embossing ink
ink of color choice (she used black)
thermal embossing powder color of choice (she used gold)
rubber thank you stamp
rubber stamp of choice for front of card (she used custom monogram stamp)
heat gun
cards and envelopes
ribbon
luggage tags
pocket folders
selection of wedding photos

What to do:

Using Thank-You stamp, stamp luggage tags with thank-you
stamps and put aside.
Press the rubber stamp on watermark ink and stamp the image
on the card by pressing down firmly and removing the stamp quickly.
Shake the thermal embossing powder over the image
until it is completely covered.
To remove excess powder tap the card over some paper
then empty this back into thermal embossing powder container.
*Make sure the card has no flecks of powder by brushing them off.

4. Turn on heat tool to melt the powder. (This may take a few seconds)

5. Once you have filled the cards with your note and enveloped them
you can insert the card and photographs into the pocket and seal it.
6. Put the ribbon through the luggage tag and tie it around pocket folder,
finish it off with a tie of your choice!

great feedback that we are going to dedicate
every Wednesday as 'Bridal Spotlight' Day.

To start our Wednesday Tradition,
this week's Bride of the Week is

Caroline wore Miracle by Monique Lhuillier

I, luckily got a chance to talk to Caroline after
the big day to get the inside scoop ...

Q: When and where did you get married?
Bo and I were married on June 4, 2011
at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Redemptorist Catholic Church
in Kansas City, Missouri, my hometown.

Q: Why did you pick the venue for your wedding?
We chose Redemptorist because several family members,
including my brother,
were married in this church and it holds special meaning to my family.
It’s a gorgeous cathedral-style Catholic church
and was the perfect setting for our special day.

Q: How did you meet your fiancé?
Bo and I were set up by Bo's Dad
in the spring of 2006 at a lunch in the Pentagon.
I wasn't aware that his Dad was bringing his cute son, Bo,
but I was thankful he did.
At the time, Bo was in the Army
and he was deployed to Iraq in January of 2007.
We stayed connected and committed (emailing, writing calling for 10 months)
until he safely came home in November 2007.
Bo eventually moved to DC so we could continue our relationship
…3 years later we were engaged!

Q: Throughout the wedding planning process,
what was your favorite part?
My favorite part of the wedding planning process
was having so much fun with my Mom.
She has impeccable taste and was always willing to do anything
to make our wedding day absolutely amazing.
Mom and I emailed and talked every single day for over year
and while there were some tough moments, which are to be expected,
we laughed so hard and so often
because of all the fun we were having together.
She was the heart of the operation
and I loved all the moments and memories we made.

Q: Throughout the wedding planning process,
what did you dread the most?
I dreaded that my hair and make-up would look like a disaster. HA.
I live in DC and the wedding was in Kansas City,
so trying to find the best people
for hair and make-up was a challenge at first.
In the end, due to Mom’s help of course,
we figured it out and I loved my hair and make-up for the wedding.

Q: How did you know 'Miracle' was the dress for you?
Call it stupid but the name ‘Miracle’
really threw me for a loop when it arrived
at Carine’s despite having shipped during the worst snow storm
the East Coast had seen in years, often called Snowmaggedon.
I have no idea how the dress made it to Carine’s in time
so that I could show it to my parents
but it did and it was a ‘Miracle.’
I think having the dress on
and seeing my Mom and Dad’s reaction
really sealed the deal for me.
I knew I wanted to wear a gown and look absolutely elegant
but seeing their response to the dress
really made me realize how special the dress is
and that it was the dress for me.
Of course, Carine had a huge role in making my parents and I feel
absolutely comfortable and creating that special moment for us.

Q: What was the most memorable moment on your big day?
The most memorable moment for me
was right after Bo and I recessed down the aisle,
the Kansas City Chorale was singing “Your Love is Lifting Me Higher”
and as we exited into the foyer we realized it was just us.
Just the two of us standing there and we embraced and kissed several times.
The photographer took several pictures
and totally captured that moment, thankfully.
We had this look of “did that just happen?”
It was amazing and it was truly my favorite moment
to just look at each other and know that we were married.

Q: Lastly, what kind of advice would you give
a bride who is planning a wedding?
Advice I would give a bride planning a wedding
would be to take a deep breath
when it gets hard and remember what your wedding day is all about
– you and your fiancé.
I think everyone passes this advice along but really take it to heart.
You can get caught up with so many details
that are upsetting and just don’t matter in the end.
It doesn’t matter if you have 10 kinds of candy
on your candy table instead of 12
and it doesn’t matter that
a groomsman was a no-show (that actually happened to us).
All of the distractions from a year out to the day of
don’t matter and try to maintain that perspective the whole way through.
You and your fiancé will be much better off
when you take a deep breath together and focus on each other.
